December 12, 2009: Deception Pass Dash Kayak & SUP Race

Posted on: November 26th, 2009 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Just caught word of this race coming up on December 12th in Washington from Olivier:

There is a SUP race that might be worth mentioning in the San Juan Islands called the Deception Pass Dash

This 4th Annual event will be held from Bowman Bay on Saturday, December 12th. This traditionally has been a kayak event, but this year they’re adding a SUP category. This is a grueling paddle in an insanely scenic spot on some of the gnarliest water in the region. Weather conditions are likely to be miserable.

Don’t forget to register before November 28th in order to get a t-shirt. Also, the fee goes up from $40 to $75 after the 28th. Make sure and read all of the criteria and safety equipment required. This is not a casual paddle! However, it should be a hoot.

From Outdoor Adventures Center's website:

This annual paddling event is open to all paddlers ages 16+. The race will be held on Saturday, December 12th, 2009. You don't need to be an expert paddler to participate - we simply ask that you prepare (practice paddling, rolling, rescues, etc) and make safe decisions about your paddling ability on the day of the race (based on actual conditions). All racers should have significant paddling experience and proven self-rescue skills. Pre-registration is required.

Thanks for the heads up Olivier!

September 27, 2009: Round the Rock – Mercer Island SUP Race

Posted on: September 8th, 2009 by Paddle Surf 2 Comments

Just found out about this stand up paddleboard race going on Sunday September 27, 2009 at Mercer Island, an island that sits between Seattle and Bellevue down in Washington.

"Round the Rock" is shaping up to becoming the premier Stand Up Paddle event in the Pacific Northwest.

The first course for the "Round the Rock" entails circumnavigating Mercer Island on Lake Washington. While 13 miles (around 21 km) may seem like a great distance, a novice paddler can cover the course at a leisurely 4-5 hours. More experienced paddlers may break the 3 hour mark.,

They'll also have a 2.5 mile (just over 4km) short course race which will begin after most competitors have finished the full course... Hardcore paddlers may decide to enter both! Of course a variety of factors will affect times including size of board, weight of the rider, and wind conditions. The last factor no one can control, but barring a hurricane or thunderstorm, this event will go on!

All proceeds will benefit Surfrider Foundation.
