Kalavida Surf Shop is putting another race together, this time for June 5, 2010....

YUP! June 5 at Kal Beach, 9-1pm!  Filmed for TV (X-weighted)

Want to try SUP racing for the first time? Then this race is for you and your friends.  It’s the 1st event in the Kalavida Summer SUP Series and a great way to try out racing for the first time.  If you don't have a board, Kalavida has boards you can rent for the race.  OPEN TO EVERYONE!  BBQ to follow at the Cookson House (Next to the Lagoon)

The latest from Kalavida Surf Shop in Vernon, about their upcoming Kalamalka Classic SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Race Weekend...

Kalavida Surf Shop, BC – May 17, 2010 – We are excited to announce that Surftech has signed on as Title sponsor of the 2010 Kalamalka Classic SUP Race, held June 19-20 on scenic Kalamalka Lake, BC. The two-day event includes a short course, long course, gear demos and a festival-like atmosphere that will appeal to new and competitive athletes, guests and spectators. Gatzke’s Farm Market will serve as race headquarters and the food and entertainment hub for the inaugural Stand Up Paddle Board race – the first of it’s kind in the province and the first major SUP Race in Canada.

The race is organized by the crew at Kalavida Surf Shop and you can expect some fun and a few surprises during the weekend. “My first SUP board was a Surftech Laird and it’s still my go-to ride so we’re excited to have them onboard (literally) to support the event. The Okanagan region is quickly gaining recognition as a premier destination for SUP and Surftech will be a big part of that growth – Paddle on!” said Kevin O’Brien, event race director.

Surftech will be showcasing their impressive line that goes deeper than just the popular Laird line and they hope to have a couple of race-specific boards on hand for demos. "I could not be more stoked to be a part of what will undoubtedly become the premiere SUP event in Canada! Kevin and Kalavida are the real deal, SUP Ohana!” added Bodie Shandro – Surftech Canadian Brand Manager.

Kevin and the Kalamalka Lake crew are starting up a Summer Stand Up Paddleboard race series, and the opening event is coming Saturda June 5th, 2010.

The race is open to everyone from newbie’s to SUPerstars and the course will start from Kal Beach and there will be categories for newbies and advanced paddlers.  If you haven’t raced a SUP event before, then this is the perfect way to start.  The event is partnering with SPrKL (The Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake) to raise awareness for our local lake and to make it even more exciting, the event is being filmed for the popular TV program, X-Weighted.

For those who don’t own a board yet, there is special rate for entry + board and paddle so that as many people can participate as possible.

In addition to the race, there will be free board demos, fun races, music and more.

Kalavida Surf Shop opening May 1, 2010

The gang at Kalavida Surf Shop let us know that they are opening their doors this coming Saturday, May 1.  Shop will be full of boards and paddles and new stock will be arriving daily as the store fills up.    They also have a special offer on rentals for the weekend as well.

Check out their location!  Footsteps from Kal Beach..... something tells us this is going to be an Endless Summer of SUP'in and Surfin'.  Their brands include Surftech, Rogue, C4, Werner, Kialoa, Grey Owl and more.  Their first official race event is June 5 on Kal Beach and it will be filmed for TV!  Stay tuned for more announcements....Check out their website!

Kalavida Surf Shop will be hosting a fun SUP Demo this coming Sunday.

Here's the release...

You are welcome to come down between 2-4pm on Sunday.  Should be a sweet and sunny day and we'll have lots of stuff to play on and look at.   We are hosting a Summer SUP Race Series and the first one is on June 5.  It's for newbies and intermediate SUP'ers and will be filmed for TV!

We are now renting boards for the season as well. Shop is schedule to open in less than two weeks.

Kevin and the crew at OKSUP.com are opening a brand new stand up paddleboard shop right across the street from Kalamalka Beach, in Vernon (Coldstream).

Watch for top stand up paddleboard brands such as Surftech, C4 Waterman, Rogue, Werner and Kialoa, as well as apparel by Sitka, Local Motion, Ocean Minded and XCEL.

They'll be offering lessons and rentals as well.

June 19-20, 2010: Kalamalka Lake Classic SUP Race

Mark the weekend of June 19-20, 2010 off in your calendar, as there's a new stand up paddleboard race coming to the Okanagan this Summer... The Kalamalka Lake Classic to be held at Kalamalka Lake near Vernon, BC.

Here's what we know so far...

The colourful, warm waters of Kalamalka Lake between Vernon and Oyama, BC will be home to the first major SUP race in CanadaThe Kalamalka Classic. It’s a 3-event SUP race at one of Canada’s prime flat water Stand Up Paddling locations and the organizers have partnered with Gatzke’s Farm Market to provide great food, a hammock hangout, bocce’ and accommodations.Overview of the Event:

Dates: June 19-20, 2010
Location: Kalamalka Lake – Vernon & Oyama, BC (3.5 hrs from Vancouver, 4.5 hrs from Seattle)

Saturday: (The Kaloya Crossover) It’s a short, loop course that has two different races; one for the newbie’s and one for the experienced paddlers.  Newbies will do a short 2-mile version of the course and the experienced paddlers will ‘crossover’ the land at Kaloya Park as part of their 6-mile loop course.  The afternoon will feature a more casual atmosphere with sprint races for prizes, board demos, vendor expo, followed by dinner at Gatzke’s Farm Market.

Sunday: (King/Queen of Kalamalka) The day that we’ll see the King and Queen of Kalamalka Lake crowned.  This is the long distance paddle and the first male and female to cross the length of Kalamalka Lake (from Oyama to Vernon) will be crowned.  Expect the winning time to come in around 2 hours for the 9-mile trek – An amazing chance to see one of the world’s most beautiful lakes up close and personal.
