Get a thick 5-6mm wetsuit or drysuit if you are going to be here in the winter. My company OR does some great drysuits.

You are going to want boots (at least 5mm) gloves (at least 3mm) and a hood.

You want to check out bigwavedave.com and magicseaweed.com for the surf/wind reports on the south coast (up from Victoria) and the west coast (between Tofino and Ucluelet)

Ocean River Sports will rent you a board in Victoria and Deep Cove Kayak would also probably be good in Vancouver.

Happy Travels.

Hi guys, we're going to Canada for the first time ever from May 14 (this year) to June 11. Flying into Vancouver. I've been a keen paddleboarder since Nov '07 (surfer since my teens before that, with a few years taken off to ski-bum in Europe & South america), currently ride Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7". Baby-boomer, so I ain't no spring chicken, but pretty fit.
The cold water there scares me a bit (wussy, I know), as we never need more than a 3/2 wetsuit here even in the middle of winter, & sometimes get away with a springsuit in winter. What should I bring in the way of wetsuits, booties, etc?
Hoping to get some waves, Vancouver Island, anywhere else? Wife doesn't surf but she won't mind exploring with me. We plan to spend a few days initially at whistler (maybe take up the skis again for the first time in 23 years!), still looking for somewhere to stay, & then the rest of the time touring Vancouver & BC.
Anyone know of a place where they would rent me a paddleboard for a week (say)? Prefer small ones, around 8'6"-9'.

Hey All,

Thought you might want to check this out. For the brave souls still out on SUPs...

Check out the link...
http://oceanrodeo.com/drysuits/soul

MEDIA RELEASE

OCEAN RODEO CREATES THE SOUL: A DRYSUIT FOR KITING, SUPING AND SAILING THAT FUSES FORM WITH FUNCTION

VICTORIA B.C. CANADA- Ocean Rodeo Sports has created a unique new drysuit for kiteboarding, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and sailing. The suit, called THE SOUL is unique in its technology and design. Unlike the “sloppy bag” look of conventional drysuits, this suit looks like a well-tailored snowboard jacket and pants. The SOUL is more flexible than a standard wetsuit and has a customizable level of warmth. This SOUL joins the two other drysuits made by Ocean Rodeo: the SURF DRY (created for surfing and SUP) and the PYRO PRO (created for kiteboarding and SUP). The SOUL is a drysuit that combines new levels of performance, aesthetics and safety for demanding water spot enthusiasts.

The SOUL utilizes innovative technology in every component of the suit. The breathable waterproof material uses a 210 Nylon Oxford face layer for durability and a hydrophilic Gelanots membrane to keep the rider dry by allowing perspiration to pass through and preventing cold water from entering. The self-entry uses hyper pliable T-zip zippers and is enclosed with the jacket which utilizes Ocean Rodeo’s Captive Zip Technology (patent pending). The suit is also equipped with a full hood which comfortably fits over a helmet and can be detached at the rider’s convenience. Other features include, a pee relief zipper, easy self-entry design, boot cuffs, a dry key pocket, a mp3 pocket, two zip-up pockets and a one year warranty on materials and construction.

Safety is fundamental at Ocean Rodeo. Given recent SUP related deaths due to exposure and the increase in novice paddlers on the water, it becomes increasingly important to ensure the appropriate safety gear is available for all watersports. On their website REI, a large dealer in SUP products urges “For cold conditions where hypothermia is a concern, wear a wetsuit or dry suit”. The SOUL allows the rider to customize the level of thermal protection for the appropriate activity and weather condition. Wearing the suit will help protect athletes from the cold and allow them to expand their season.

This aesthetically refined drysuit offers kiters, SUPers and sailors technical protection from the environment

Limited sizes of the SOUL will be available March 1st, 2012 with a full size run available by June 1st, 2012. The SOUL retails at $849USD and will be available through select dealers as well as online. The PYRO PRO and the SURF DRY are in stock and currently available.

Ocean Rodeo is a Canadian company that has been building drysuits for 11 years. Their products have been rigorously tested by SUPers, surfers, sailors and kiteboarders. The company has a passion for enjoying the water and is committed to creating durable and innovative products that allow riders to push the envelope.

For information about the SOUL, SURF DRY, PYRO PRO or any other Ocean Rodeo products please contact Erik Hanson, head of the Ocean Rodeo Drysuit Division.

Hey Leigh,

My wife Kim and I are brand new to this sport. Kim has been out once and I went today for my 3rd trip. I paddled through some ice on Spider lake and then went to Qualicum and paddled with some sealions in the waves. This is a great place to live where one can do this all year 'round. I am willing to travel to meet more newbies to learn this wonderful sport. I am sure that McIver would be nice in the winter as well as the ocean on calm days.

Lemme know,

I am new to this sport and I do believe that mountain biking has a rival. I live in Parksville, however will travel to meet up with others. I went to Spider lake today and paddled through some ice and then stopped in Qualicum and paddled in the waves with some sea lions. I have only been out 3 times now, but each time is better than the last and I am really enjoying it.

Hey There!

For all you still SUPing (and those wanting to extend your season) Check this out...

http://oceanrodeo.com/drysuits/sup

I have been surfing/SUPing in drysuits for the last 5 years and think this is the way to go! The suits are breathable, customizable, flexible and durable. (Full disclosure: I have done testing for Ocean Rodeo for the last 5 years and have recently joined the team. They are an awesome bunch of hard working SUPers, surfers, kiters and adventurers) The suits are really great and I was wondering what other Canadians are using to get out in the water in Canada? What do you guys think of these suits?

Hey Silverboarder,

I'm based out of Kelowna, but all year round we paddle at a variety of the different locations throughout the Okanagan. We hit up Kal lake both by Kalavida at Kal Beach and Kaloya quite a bit as well as Wood Lake and Okanagan quite a bit since we are in Kelowna.

If you are on Twitter, look for paddlesurfer365 as that's Bob Purdy's handle and he posts everyday where he paddles. You can also look for me at 250SUP on twitter and find out if I'm with Bob or heading to some other location. I haven't found a reliable weather predictor out Vernon way, but COSA (Central Okanagan Sailing Association) in Kelowna has a webcam and wind meter that gives accurate data for weather on Okanagan lake near Kelowna. We use it to decide whether to bring the surfboard or the raceboard and it's pretty good.

I'm pretty much limited to weekend paddling now, but if you ever want to head out, just send me a message on Twitter or email me at sridzan@hotmail.com and we'll sort out when and where.

Hey all!
Just curious if anyone else out there has some info on some good wind/wave sites for keeping up with what's coming up Kal or OK lakes? I'm up at the Star and it's a little tough to just wander down for a peep.

On that note, is there anyone else interested in training/doing some downwinders? I'm looking to start racing next year after years of racing sprint canoes. Doing it on SUP is new, but I've got a decent base. Training with others (faster or slower) is always a great experience so I thought I'd check to see if there was anyone out there interested in meeting up for a paddle, not to mention that it's that little bit safer when doing a downwinder. I'm normally down a few times a week, OK or Kal works for me (pref the one with the waves ). Hope to hear from some people!

ps looks like there's at least one good day coming this week!

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a SUP board from the boys at Compass Adventures/SurfSUP in Comox and am keen to get out, but don't know anyone else here in Campbell River who SUPs. I'm new at it but have fallen in love with the sport from the minute i stood on a board!

If anyone is keen to get in touch, lemme know.

Cheers,
Leigh

Has anyone here ever shipped their board anywhere? If so, who did you use and how did you do it?
So far FEDEX, UPS etc. won't take it :(
I'm travelling to Hawaii for a few weeks and don't really want to be renting everywhere I go. I'd rather just have my board with me and though I could possibly save some money by shipping it.
Thanks for your help:)

Kits Surf Club has recently built a covered halau*( hawaiian for canoe house) for up to 12 outrigger canoes and surfskis and up to 5 SUP boards in a horizontal slotted rack.

Interested in storing a board steps from the water at one of Vancouver's best seaside rec centres?

If you live in the Kits/Point Grey area...are tired of schelpping your SUP around on your car, ( you thought it made you look cool, right?) or kicking it around on your patio,

Storage and membership at Jericho Sailing centre is cheap!

I am selling my 2011 Starboard Drive so that I can get a race board. This board is 10'5" long and 30" wide. I do not have a measured weight for it but it is lighter than a lot of other boards I have used. The board is quite stable but feels much more "alive" under your feet than rental boards. It is designed for flat water and small waves and I think it does a good job for both. I have been on 4' waves at Long Beach with it. If you are interested in learning about and taking on some waves but still want to be able to paddle flat water and are 160 lbs or less, this board will work well for you. You can try it out at Jericho. $1000. Send me an email jcringan@interchange.ubc.ca or call 604-222-8535. John

I'm headed to BC next week and would like to SUP the rivers near Squamish. We surf a fair amount here - but we're excited to enjoy the other side of SUPing. Since I'm flying in from the East Coast USA, my wife and I will need to rent gear. A guide would be nice, too! Any help the community may have will be appreciated ! Many thanks !

I have two of these boards and only need one...

Specifications:
LENGTH: 12'6"
NOSE: 9"
MID: 27"
TAIL: 11"
THICK: 6"
VOLUME: 250L
FINS: Futures
TECHNOLOGY: Tuflite

Surftech's 12'6" Jamie Mitchell model is fast, stable, and light on the shoulders. This is a Battle of the Paddle 2009 winning board! A great downwind board for racing or just cruising on a long paddle, it even performs well upwind and on the flats.

the pin style does make this board less stable and it took me some time to learn the balance on it. I still love this board as a good all arounder.

Special Features: Easy carry handle, deck traction.

$1500.00 with RPS race board bag(red)and Dakine coiled calf leash. beautiful blue tiger stripe finish and cammo trac pad. some paddle chips on rails, no dings. paddled for one season.

Not sure if this is the place to post a review...

Have had this great board for just over 2 weeks. Paddled it extensively on our pond/lakelet near our home. Have taken it down the Bow River in Calgary last Sunday (for the 'RIppin' Down the Bow' event, put on by Red Nik Surf). Just had it out today at ForgetMeNot Pond southwest of Bragg Creek in K-Country. Have yet to find a condition that wasn't stable on this board. Amazing!

Glide is everything one would desire, and the board is as tough as a lioness protecting her cubs. I have bumped into rocks, trees, shoreline, and have had another board bump into mine - no scrapes, dents, damage!

The only complaint I will mention is that the board is heavy. Otherwise, it is a dream to cruise on, and ride through fast, yet mellow, rapids on a river...and, someday, summer waves in Tofino. A great board for anyone over 180lbs, but easily works for kids, and 1st time SUP adults as well (weight be damned).

This board will take make you feel like you've SUPed for years. Highly recommended!

PS - I have paddled several different boards in the last 2 years - between 11'-12' - on lakes, reservoirs, and on the ocean (Hawaii). The Universal 11'6 is, hands down, the most stable board of it's size on the market, that also offers exceptional glide as well. With the entry rocker, it will most likely do very well in up to waist-high waves as well. Great price for such a quality board!
