Paddling a SUP for 10.88 kms in early afternoon wind chop mixed with heavy boat waves from all directions, while watching surf-skis rocket past me, was my only other "Tour De Indian Arm" experience. The kind of conditions that require more balancing than paddling, and can lead to some sour complaining, the 2010 Tour de Indian Arm still stands out as the toughest race conditions I've ever experienced.

But not this year. The extended gloomy winter weather kept the water calm and kept the power-boaters at home searching for cheap flights to Hawaii. Though there was no wind swell, which would have been fun, the conditions couldn't have been better for our good sized group of SUP-ers to see how fast they could paddle on flat water and keep it going for over an hour. The small crew of regulars was there as well as a few new faces, and some new boards, both of which are always good to see. The first leg of the course was fairly calm once the flurry of surf-ski wakes dissipated into the distance, but rounding the Cates turn some large boat swell made it interesting to stay on course. The current seemed strong as I headed across the arm, paddling about 90% on the left side and looking forward to the next turn so I could switch sides. But that didn't help, it ended up being just as bad the whole way, 20 or so strokes on the left, 2 on the right and so it continued. Luckily Mike was right on my tail and he reminded me that we had to go around grey rocks on the way back or I would have gone the wrong way, obliviously following two mis-guided kayakers straight back to the Cove. Everyone finished in a respectable amount of time considering it was the furthest some had ever paddled before, and everyone I saw coming in was still paddling strong. The few in the lead were red-lining (well, I was at least) in a very close sprint to the dock that made it apparent that youth might soon be more of an advantage than waterline.

Most fellow Sup racers kept drifting around in the water after crossing the finish line, cheering other paddlers in, trading and trying new boards, or discussing the finer points of displacement vs planing. Even after such a long paddle it's hard to get off your board, it's just too fun, that's why we're all so stoked about this new sport and a good part of the reason I race, to be part of something in it's beginning, where all of the people involved seem to have the excitement of a kid with their first bike.

Shortly after the beers and burgers started, our window of "okay" weather ended and the rain began... again, ending another fun event on our beautiful fjord in the coast mountains. Thank you to all the great people that made it happen, and thanks for including SUP!

MEC’s Big Chop Thursday Night Paddle Series

Posted on: May 17th, 2011 by Paddle Surf 1 Comment

There's a new Thursday night race series in town for SUP, and it's the Big Chop Summer Paddle Series.

The Mountain Equiqment Co-op Big Chop Summer Paddle Series is a 10 race series happening on Thursday evenings in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The race is open to OC 1 & 2, Kayaks, Paddleboards, and Canoes. The 2011 series starts on Thursday, May 5th, at 7pm.

Imagine. It’s a Thursday evening and you just got off work. It was a stressful day and you need a release. You head to the beach as the sun is setting. 100 boats are lined up off of the shore of Vanier Park. Kayakers vs canoers vs outriggers are all set to battle the 7-10km course. Think Cannonball Run on water. The gun goes off, the race starts, the paddles churn the water, and the bow of the boats stir up the wake. Sweating, heart beating, adrenaline flowing. You finish. You smile. New friends, cold drinks, and tasty food awaits you. What a night. The long workday is now the last thing on your mind. That’s what the Big Chop Summer Paddle Series is all about..

Molokai 2 Oahu for Standup4Greatbear

Posted on: April 22nd, 2011 by Paddle Surf No Comments

IN 100 DAYS, 2 CANADIAN STAND UP PADDLE SURFERS WILL JOIN THE WORLDS MOST RESPECTED WATERMEN AND WOMEN IN THE EPIC 32 MILE CHANNEL CROSSING FROM MOLOKAI TO OAHU TO RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS FOR ONE OF CANADA’S MOST PRISITINE COASTLINES ALONG THE GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST.

Norm Hann - Mountain Surf Adventures

April 22, 2011, (Vancouver, British Columbia) The Ka’iwi Channel, also known as the “channel of bones”, aka Molokai Channel, has a centuries old reputation for being one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world. Ka’iwi has claimed the lives of many, from ancient canoe fleets, to fisherman and watermen including the tragic loss of Hawaiian big-wave surfer Eddie Aikau.

On July 31st, 2011, Norm Hann and Bodie Shandro of British Columbia aspire to add their names to the list of those watermen and women that have successfully crossed the channel in the 15th Annual Molokai 2 Oahu Race. Unofficially recognized as the “World Championships” of paddleboarding, stand up paddle boarding is a relatively new category in the elite race. Hann and Shandro will be competing in the 2-man division.

Both men are considered “Canadian pioneers” in the sport of stand up paddleboarding, and are proud of their surf roots. Considered race veterans, adventurers and highly regarded certified SUP instructors, Hann owns and operates Mountain Surf Adventures,  and Shandro, Paddle Surf Fitness.

Join them in the race of their lives by pledging in support of the Standup4Greatbear organization. Standup4Greatbear is committed to promoting awareness and understanding of the significance of the Great Bear Rainforest and preserving its unique status as a pristine example of human respect for and coexistence with the environment. Partial proceeds raised will also be shared with Hawaii’s Na Kama Kai Organization. Na Kama Kai’s mission is to empower youth by creating, conducting and supporting ocean-based programs, specifically targeting ocean awareness & safety in order to increase the capacity of youth in the community through cultural & environmental education.
