SurfSUP Vancouver Island Series 2010 gets under way

Comox was the start of the Vancouver Island SUP series this last weekend. This year the series will be hosted in Qualicum Beach, Ucluelet, Victoria and the finale’ will be in Comox.

SurfSUP, the major sponsors of this series would like to thank all the competitors for coming out. They showed that paddle boarding is taking a firm grip on the Island and the West Coast.

Twenty six competitors from all over the Island braved the inclement weather, but organizers note that this was an increase of 40% over last year. There were head on winds of 15 knots, side shore waves and an easy downwind leg, all of which made this first race a challenge. The youngest competitor in the competition was a mere 9 years old.

The race took on a LeMans style start for each category which gave the spectators something more to watch. Comox is a great location for hosting water sport events and can offer both short and long distance races which can be viewed by the public with ease. This years race was considerably more competative and the skill level of the paddlers has risen considerably.
