Tuesday Night SUP Race @ Deep Cove Kayak Recap

Posted on: June 30th, 2010 by Paddle Surf 2 Comments

Deep Cove Kayak put on a great race this past Tuesday down in the Cove and everything (well, aside from my time) exceeded expectations! Conditions were exceptional, turnout was outstanding, and the vibe was super friendly.

The race was held in conjunction with Deep Cove Kayak's regular Tuesday Night Race Series, with SUP being the featured event for the night and it was their best SUP turn out to a race by far, with 27 ready and stoked stand up paddlers.

The Stand Up Paddleboard course starting off at Deep Cove, around South to Grey Rocks Island, across to Hamber Island just off Belcarra, then back into Deep Cove for an approximate 4.6km round trip.

For those not familiar with the area, here's a map with my GPS route overlay:

This was my first time participating in a Stand Up Paddleboard race and I now know I've got a fair bit of work to do if I want to get competitive. Racing definitely takes a different mindset and level of fitness from recreational paddling so our typical flatwater "training" regimen of stopping here and there along the way to take in the views, wasn't all that applicable to a racing scenario.

Not saying that you needed to be fast to have fun as there were a ton of paddlers out there taking it mellow and having a good time, but the experience just showed me that there's another level of speed to these boards and with some hard work, I might be able to get onto the podium too one of these days... Eventually... Maybe.

Anyways, I raced in the unlimited class with my Starboard K15, along with three other racers on K15's, one guy on a beauty 14' Ron House Full Carbon and a fifth racer on a Naish Glide. Amongst the unlimited racers I swept up last place but had a great time doing it and look forward to improving next time.

Bob Putnam from Deep Cove Kayak got pretty much holeshot from the start and maintained it throughout the race, followed by Tyler Massey and Daryl Remmler.

Kelvin Humenny blazed the stock 12'6 class with his beautiful hand built wooden 12'1 SUP and paddle. The rest of the stock class was made up of a wide variety of boards, tons of Starboard Blends, Cruisers, and Pins. Also saw a few Jimmy Styks, a Walden 10'10, even an old windsurfer or two... Whatever was available to get out there and have fun!

Lina Augaitis placed second and Ken Stobbart from Trident Sports placed third, both on Starboard Pins, rounded out the top three in the stock 12'6 division.

Here are the complete, unsorted results:

The event wrapped up at The Raven with beers, burgers, video recap on the TV's and lots of socializing amongst the racers. What was great to see is how friendly the SUP scene is becoming here in Vancouver. A lot of the guys know one another from past races and other sports, but those that are new to the game were welcomed as part of the team, and all was very cool and friendly across the board... Hoping that continues for sure!

Thanks again to Bob and his team at Deep Cove Kayak and on that note be sure to read his recap of the race as well!

Everyone I spoke to is stoked for the next race and if you didn't make it this week, be sure to get it on your calendar for next week as they will be running SUP races alongside their Tuesday Night Races every week here on in.

Kalamalka Lake, BC, June 26, 2010 - The Surftech Kalamalka Classic is in the history books and the inagural event attracted almost 50 entries from across the province, Alberta and even Washington.  It was a good sign that the sport is growing at a steady pace in the Okanagan region and it brought together a great group of athletes and spectators from all types of sporting backgrounds.

Saturday’s first event was the Kaloya Crossover, a short 3.5 mile paddle that included two trips through the ‘Riviera’ that connects Kalamalka Lake from Wood Lake and a short 30 second portage across Kaloya Park.  The unique course was an instant hit and in the men’s class, Beau Whitehead of Belllingham edged out Norm Hann of Squamish by a mere 40 seconds at a time of 39:45.  Coldstream’s Wade ‘Woody’ Anderson clocked in for the third. In the women’s race Lina Augaitis of Vancouver, in only her second SUP race, fought off some early challenges to claim the win ahead of Jen Segger of Squamish with a time of 43:59.  ‘Penticton’ Pam Young earned a respectable third.

The second event on Saturday was a more casual Recreational Race and at only 1.5 miles, it was a newbie-friendly event.  It also included two trips through the Riviera and a short loop through the west side of Kaloya Park.  It was Garth Day of Vancouver who topped the men’s division with Ken Rymer of Kelowna and Jonathon Bowers of Kamloops in 2nd and 3rd.  Michelle Mitchell of Vernon paddled to the win on the women’s side ahead of Alison Nelson of Penticton and Michele Tarr of Vernon.

Saturday afternoon featured laid-back fun races, music and a festival-like atmosphere followed by some great food, award presentations and prize giveaways at Gatzke’s Farm Market - The event and social headquarters.  Each of the day’s winners was presented with Surftech Adjustable paddles and Lisette Smid of Coldstream won the Werner Advantage paddle. Special thanks to Al, Ingrid and Lindsay for the great hospitality. Check out their market at www.gatkefarmmarkets.com.

On Sunday it was the marque event - a scenic 10 mile stretch across the length of Kalamalka Lake starting in Oyama and ending up at Kal Beach in Vernon.  Winds settled down at just the right time for the early start to the King and Queen of Kalamalka.  Racers started the day off with a short sprint into the ‘Riviera’ which cast them into the wide open lake.  Each of the three classes were released through a staggered start that brought most of the competitors within sight near the finish line and the first one to reach the beach in the men’s Unlimited class was Beau Whitehead in a time of 1:49:12.  6 minutes later Norm Hann arrived in a time of 1:55:54 followed by Bodie Shandro who came in at 1:59:04. In the 12’6 and Under Stock Women’s class, Lina Augaitis edged out Jen Segger to take her second win of the Classic in a time of 2:17.  Segger touched the shore in 2:25:30 ahead of Sheila Sovereign who reached the beach in 2:32.  Kelvin Humenney of Vancouver topped the men’s 12’6 and Under in a time of 2:05 ahead of Bob Woodman and Scott Siemens of Vernon who completed the course in 2:06:27 and 2:09:30 respectively. Winners were presented with special ‘tiki-board’ awards designed by venerable Vancouver-artist, Jim Cummins and the event concluded on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Surftech’s Brand Manager, Bodie Shandro, had this to say about the event “WOW, this is what SUP is all about! Kevin and Michelle not only managed to put together a first class event, but somehow talked the weather gods into blessing the weekend with perfect summer temps! From first timers, families and pets, to some of the fastest paddlers in the Northwest, the event seemed like an extension of the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii! The "aloha" spirit was alive throughout the weekend. Sign me up for next year!”

Check out results and photos from the ‘Classic’ on the OK SUP website at www.oksup.com. You asked for it…………The 2011 event is scheduled to run June 18 and 19th so plan to be there.

Who’s coming to Deep Cove this fine Tuesday evening?

Posted on: June 28th, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Last minute reminder that Deep Cove Kayak is holding an SUP race in Deep Cove this Tuesday June 29th.

Looks like the weather's going to hold so we should be in for a great night of racing.

Post up in the comments if you're in... I'll be there on my yellow Starboard K15 flailing away. This will be my first race so be kind if you see me on the water :)

Starboard Demo at the June 29th Deep Cove SUP Race

Posted on: June 24th, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Just got word that Starboard's going to be on hand at the Deep Cove Kayak Stand Up Paddleboard race on Tuesday July 29th with a great selection of their boards available for a minimal rental fee.

Boards that will be in attendance include:

  • Starboard Drive: More tuned towards surf, but a good flatwater board as well
  • Starboard Blend: Great all-round board
  • Starboard Big Easy: Solid all-round board for the bigger paddlers
  • Starboard Hero: At 9'0 this boards probably not going to win any races, but at 33" wide it has great stability
  • Starboard K15: My personal favorite flatwater specialist board. Takes a bit getting used to with its displacement hull (read tippy), but once you get the hang of it, it's exceptionally fast and glides forever
  • Starboard Pin: Super fast 12'6 flatwater racer, specifically tuned to fit into the stock 12'6 class
  • Starboard Cruiser: Great all-round 12'6 board for flatwater, surfs fairly well
  • Starboard Whopper: The Hero's bigger brother, another board that will be fun to play around with (especially in the surf) but not winning any races.

Get there early for the best selection!

Bodie Shandro’s Battle of the Paddle Hawaii Report

Posted on: June 23rd, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

A week has passed since I arrived home from the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii and I am beginning to think that I am on a permanent "Aloha" high! It was the Battle of the Paddle last October that prompted the paradigm shift in my life. I went down to SoCal as a an age group competitor, a weekend warrior that fell in love with SUP the moment I was first introduced to it by Colin Kearns from Island Longboards. BOP Doheney changed everything.

Three months later I become the Brand Manager for both Surftech and Kialoa, started an SUP Instruction business, paddlesurfitness.ca, became the first certified Academy of Stand Up Paddleboarding Instructor in Canada, and started a personal training business based on SUP. How much deeper into this amazing sport can I get.....enter BOP Hawaii. How could I possibly pass on the opportunity to compete, Surftech was sponsoring and Waikiki was the birthplace of Stand Up Paddling! I arrived the Monday before the event to meet up with my bro Dane Deboer from SoCal. What a welcome, straight to dinner with Sparky and legendary surfer Joey Cabell at his Charthouse restaurant!

Tuesday morning would see us packing up a dozen boards and departing the beautiful Outrigger on the Beach north to Hawaii Kai for my first down-winder. What a crew, Gerry Lopez, Sparky, Candice Appleby, Ron House....the list of surf legends ended at 13! 25 knot winds, and 10 ft swell made this one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life! 50 meter glides off the huge offshore bumps! My BARK 12'6 Competitor ate it up for the entire 8 mile run. A day not soon forgotten. Gerry and other regulars claimed several times over that "this is as good as it gets"! The next few days proceeding the event were spent resting and learning to "surf" a race board.

Thursday morning I was joined by Chuck Patterson and Colin Mcphillips for a surf session out at "pops" on Waikiki. Needless to say they were both slaying it on the race boards, and making the most of the practice with memories of the importance of "surfing" at last seasons Doheney event.

Perfect tropical weather remained for the entire week that would see us through press conferences, surf sessions and fine dining thanks to our gracious Hawaiian hosts.

Friday was set up day and Fort De Russy Park came alive with vendor tents, stages and all of flare that a prestigious event such as this would bring. The highlight of the day was without question the welcoming party at the Quiksilver Store. An amazing gala event with an endless supply of beautifully presented local delicacies, fine wines, live music!  If you have never eaten "poke" before, this was the finest I have ever been treated too. The list of invite only attendees included all of Hawaii's surf royalty, competitors and sponsors. We did not want the night to ever end!

Thankfully yet another comfortable sleep on the penthouse floor of the Outrigger ( not sure how that happened) followed as it was game on Saturday morning!  No one could have ever predicted the 600 plus competitors that registered for the weekends events. Even Sparky and Gerry were in awe of what they had created.

The opening ceremony was a fabulous performance of traditional dance that reminded those in attendance of the deep soul in Hawaiian culture. As the day moved on through the Keiki ( kids ) races and the open age group race, a pit began to develop in my stomach as the Ka Heihei Kulani ( elite) race drew near. The wind and swell were both up, the reef that just four hours earlier was dry, now had consistent sets rolling in.

It would be another 'Le Mans" style beach start with 122 competitors lined up awaiting the gun. My ears were ringing, sweat pouring down my face  in the tropical heat and we were off! For the next 1:42 minutes, my sole focus was "do not fall"!  Three zig zag laps out and in through the surf followed by a run on the beach and back out, repeat and repeat again equaled 6 + miles of hell! As if getting out through the surf wasn't hard enough, the turn north was straight into a 20 knot headwind, fighting to catch a wave back inside, run and repeat!

At the end of it all, it was quoted by last years winner and 8 time Molokai race champion Jamie Mitchell as the most difficult race of his life. In the end, it was Danny Ching crossing the finish line at 1:22 to take home the $5000 purse. Saturday night = Ibuprofen and sleep, the Ke Ala Kai Loa, Hawaii Kai 10 miler awaited Sunday morning.

Despite the stiffening pain that had settled in following Saturdays event, I felt great, and ready for the 10 miler. Wind were down a bit from the training run but the swell was up. A mile offshore in the wind, chop and swell would have intimidated the hell out of me just a week earlier, however I had listened closely to my mentors 3 days earlier.."watch the tip of your board, when it drops dig hard to get on the wave".... "don't fight it if the chop takes away the nose, just ride it out", words that proved invaluable to me in a great finish of the most grueling event that I have ever undertaken.

The photo of me coming into shore with good bro Ron Bett's handling the board illustrates the sheer pain that I was in that moments later after the sprint through the sand to the finish line was replaced by jubilation!

Words, regardless of the writer could never describe the feeling that one comes away with after such an amazing event. I will carry memories of BOP HI with me forever. The word that comes to mind most often is the Hawaiian word "Ohana", meaning family.

I can only imagine that what I was able to experience could be likend to what the surf culture experienced in the early days, when everybody was stoked about this new sport, regardless of what or where you surfed, as long as you surfed! Stand Up Paddling is here to stay for many, many decades to come and I am soooo honored to be a part of it's rebirth!

Aloha.

Kalamalka Classic SUP Race Recap

Posted on: June 21st, 2010 by kelvin No Comments

There's a theory out there that Polynesians were the first to settle the BC coast and are the ancestors of our coastal natives. My addition to that theory would be that the relentless rain and clouds of the coast drove these early people East in hopes of finding the sunnier side of this new island. When they made their way over the mountains and discovered the familiar emerald water, they settled here and named it Kalamalka.

Fast forward to now, the beauty, friendliness and stoke of this place rivals any tropical paradise. The well organized race weekend put on by Kevin and Michelle of Kalavida Surf Shop was one of the best events I've ever attended, and Kalamalka Lake is a perfect venue for SUP. I think this could the beginning of the biggest annual Canadian SUP event.

SurfSUP Vancouver Island Series 2010 gets under way

Posted on: June 15th, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Comox was the start of the Vancouver Island SUP series this last weekend. This year the series will be hosted in Qualicum Beach, Ucluelet, Victoria and the finale' will be in Comox.

SurfSUP, the major sponsors of this series would like to thank all the competitors for coming out. They showed that paddle boarding is taking a firm grip on the Island and the West Coast.

Twenty six competitors from all over the Island braved the inclement weather, but organizers note that this was an increase of 40% over last year. There were head on winds of 15 knots, side shore waves and an easy downwind leg, all of which made this first race a challenge. The youngest competitor in the competition was a mere 9 years old.

The race took on a LeMans style start for each category which gave the spectators something more to watch. Comox is a great location for hosting water sport events and can offer both short and long distance races which can be viewed by the public with ease. This years race was considerably more competative and the skill level of the paddlers has risen considerably.

RESULTS

  • Mens Stuart Robinson 12ft 6in 1st
  • Women Racheal Hagert 1st
  • Novice Britany Benjestorf 1st
  • Youth Riley Richter 1st
  • Groms Josh Brooks 1st
  • Unlimited Cory Brooks 1st

Vancouver Island Series 2010 - Rcae #2 Qualicum Beach Qualicum Beach - Race 2

Great weather again for the second race of the series. A different challenge for the competitors as 15 -20 knot winds whipped up 4ft waves. The course was an upwind / downwind /through the surf race which made it a challenge for all the athletes.

Thanks to Island Longboards for hosting this years' event and for all the sponsors who donate so many prizes for the competitors.

RESULTS

  • Mens Andrew Robinson 12ft 6in 1st
  • Women Holly lefevre 1st
  • Youth Riley Richter 1st
  • Groms Josh Brooks 1st
  • Unlimited Allan Gornall 1st

There were a total of 19 racers spread across 5 categories. The level of competition has definitely improved this year. The surf break made this race great to watch and after the races were done then the fun began with everyone having a great surf day.

Thanks again to everyone who turned out for this race and tell everyone about the next race in Victoria July 11th hosted by Ocean River Sports.

Just got word from Norm Hann from Mountain Surf Adventures, that the conclusion of his STANDUP4GREATBEAR SUP Expedition was covered by the local media in Kitimat.

Nice little shot of him finishing up the expedition and his Surftech Bark 14' Expedition board.

Check out the video here

Great work Norm, and congratulations once again!

Tuesday June 29th: Deep Cove SUP Race

Posted on: June 3rd, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Deep Cove Kayak is hosting an SUP race on Tuesday June 29th, which will run alongside their regular Tuesday Night Race Series.

Here's the word from the source...

Deep Cove Outdoors is sponsoring an SUP Race at Deep Cove on Tuesday Night June 29th. I'm looking for some feedback on the race format. I would like to encourage participation from large number of people so I don't want to make the course length too long. I am thinking 6 km. Which I imagine would take people about 45 - 70 minutes. ?? I imagine some of the faster guys cruise at 9 kph whereas some of the slower paddlers are about 5 kph.

We will route the course around some of the islands to make it interesting. Usually in the evening the winds are calm. The other option is to do a lap style race which is more interesting for spectators.

Starboard will be involved and like our regular Tuesday Night Kayak Race we will video the race and take it to The Raven Pub for an Apres Race Party.

As a surf ski paddler I'm going to start training SUP tomorrow so I can kick some SU Paddler Butt!!
Yeah that's right, let the trash talking begin.
I hope to see you at the Race.
