More on Paddling Technique from Todd Bradley

Todd Bradley from C4 Waterman gives some exceptional advice to Evan from StandUpPaddleSurf.net on refining paddle stroke, arm and grip position.

Stand Up Paddleboarding is becoming more mature and formalized with the introduction of the Academy of Stand Up Paddle Instructors SUP Certification Program.

Bode Shandro from Surftech & Kialoa, was the only Canadian participant to attend the inaugural event, and here's what he had to say about the experience...

I am very pleased to announce that last weekend I was invited by the World Stand Up Paddleboard Association to take part in Southern California's very first ASI, Academy of Stand Up Paddle Instructors SUP certification program at the Newport Beach Aquatic Center. Instructed by none other than legendary watermen Dick and Dan DeBoer, the first lady of SUP, Nikki Gregg and soul surf legend and producer of the"The Ultimate Guide to SUP" Dan Gavere, I became the first certified SUP instructor in Canada. I look forward to sharing the vast knowledge that was shared with me in my summer sessions beginning in June throughout Western Canada!

Check out Bodie's site www.paddlesurfitness.ca for more information on his paddle surf fitness training and instructional programs.

Battle of the Paddle Hawaii invites you to be part of the exciting rebirth of the sport that began right here in Waikiki.

Staged at historic Duke Kahanamoku Beach at Ft. DeRussy, June 12 & 13, the Battle of the Paddle is more than an ordinary paddle race. For the sport’s elite paddlers it presents the greatest championship styled SUP race as well as the sport’s largest cash purse of over $25,000.

There is also an Open Age-Group race, relay races, as well as FREE kids races. At the last Battle of the Paddle in California, the Open Age-Group Race had the largest SUP field ever assembled. The Hawaii race is promising to be even bigger, so come and be a part of history in the making.

New website for Rocky Point Kayak

Posted on: April 6th, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Some of the regular readers here may know that PaddleSurf.ca is produced by my company Servoweb Technologies where we specialize in things like  designing, developing and marketing websites for our great clients located all over the World. :)

A lot of those clients do more corpratey stuff like real estate development, professional services, manufacturing, hospitality and so forth, but once in a while we get to mix business with pleasure and in this case, mix work with stand up paddleboarding!

As such, just wanted to give the shout out to Jamie and the crew at Rocky Point Kayak, for whom we've just finished off the design and development of a brand new website for their Kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard rental and tours company, operating out of Rocky Point Park in Port Moody.

SUP gets front page on Yahoo.com

Check this story out on GrindTV.com, showcasing Jodie Nelson's encounter with a whale during her Catalina to Dana Point trip.

When Southern California surfer Jodie Nelson set out Sunday to standup-paddle nearly 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point, she hoped it'd inspire her best friend, who has been involved in a long and exhausting struggle with breast cancer, to keep fighting.

Nelson, 34, whose mother and aunt are cancer survivors, also hoped her nine-hour test of endurance would raise money for two cancer charities and heighten awareness about a plight affecting millions of women.

What Nelson could not have known was that a 30-foot minke whale would swim alongside her 14-foot board and accompany the surfer as she stood and paddled for two of those nine hours, thus joining the cause.

Check out the complete story at GrindTV.com and more importantly, please be sure to visit her website at paddlewithpurpose.com and donate to help find a cure for breast cancer!

Chuck Patterson WIns 2010 Surftech SUP Shootout

Posted on: April 1st, 2010 by Paddle Surf No Comments

Chuck Patterson claimed top honors at the 2010 Surftech SUP Shootout at the Lane a couple weeks ago in March.

Chuck Patterson (Dana Point, CA), won the 2nd Annual Surftech SUP Shootout at the Lane over event rookie Zane Schweitzer (Lahaina, HI), Michael Roberts (Pacific Grove, CA) and pro kiteboarder Peter Trow (Central Coast, CA) to take out his second Surftech Shootout victory in as many years.

Patterson has emerged as one of stand up paddling’s premier over-all athletes alongside Australia’s Jamie Mitchell, Hawaii’s Slater Trout and a host of other elite paddlers. Chuck’s proven his athleticism by winning prestigious races such as the 2008 Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, he’s one of the leading stand up paddle big wave riders (Chuck was the first paddler to charge the Cortez Bank this winter) and he showed all who were at Steamer Lane on Santa Cruz’s notorious Westside this weekend, that he is one of the world’s best in waves of any size.

In a final that saw consistent double overhead plus sets rolling through Middle Peak, competitors had to decide whether to attempt to pick off the Middle Peak bombs or opt for the lined-up bowls at the Slot. “The Lane was a World Class wave this weekend!” exclaimed Patterson “These guys were ripping and really pushing the levels of waveriding today. After each wave, I’d paddle back out and see guys just killing it.”

“The Surftech Shootout was awesome this weekend.” said runner-up Zane Schweitzer “You couldn’t ask for better conditions. It was solid 5′-6′ Hawaiian out there today. I’m so stoked! Thanks to Surftech for putting on such a great event”

Pro kiteboarder, Peter Trow decided to enter the contest at the last minute. “This was my first SUP contest so I’m really stoked I decided to come up. The waves were great”

“The Surftech Shootout is going to be on everyone’s calendar next year for sure.” commented Patterson “It was a very well run contest and the venue is unreal.”

Surftech SUP Shootout Final Results:
1 – Chuck Patterson
2 – Zane Schweitzer
3 – Michael Roberts
4 – Peter Trow

Surftech SUP Shootout Semi Final Results:
